Artist of the Day

(In 1959, when she was nominated for a Tony for
Gypsy but lost to Mary Martin in The Sound of Music):
"You can't buck a nun."

Ethel Merman, famed broadway musical star (as seen above in "Anni Get Your Gun) and forever the base for any animation of tough old broadway actress. Never heard of her before? Like a nudging forgotten memory, she's the original person who sang "There's No Business like Show Business". Yes..it's all coming back to you now eh?

A petite woman with a not-so-petite voice, she is IMHO the Queen of Broadway. Her brassy voice didn't need a microphone and her loudness was that of pure art. Much like the confidence behind a drill sergeant's yell, her loud voice was beyond annoying, it was pure character. Passed away in 1984, she gone man...GONE...but don't fret, she still lives in our lovely eardrums, brassing away.

Her IMDB.com bio.
